What are Varicose Veins & Spider Veins?
Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that are visible from just below the surface of the skin — usually in the legs, thighs, or ankles. These veins usually appear blue. Varicose veins occur when the veins’ valves become weakened, which cause them to stretch out. This results in poor blood flow in these veins, which can result in a number of uncomfortable symptoms.
Varicose veins can cause the following symptoms in the leg or foot:
- Pain
- Swelling
- Aching
- A burning sensation
- A feeling of heaviness
- Itchy skin in the affected area
In some cases, varicose veins are associated with the more serious issue of deep vein thrombosis, which causes blood clots in the deep veins. Spider veins are similar to varicose veins, except that they involve smaller blood vessels that are usually visible in web-like clusters (usually in red, blue, and purple).
Sclerotherapy
Spider Vein Treatment
Sclerotherapy is a procedure used to treat broken capillaries and blood vessels. A medicine is injected into the vessels, which makes them shrink. It is used for adults with spider veins, smaller varicose veins, and hemorrhoids.
Sclerotherapy has been used in the treatment of spider veins and occasionally varicose veins for over 150 years. Like varicose vein surgery, sclerotherapy techniques have evolved during that time. Modern techniques offer many different types of sclerosing agents.
The medical professional will first evaluate the area to make sure you are a candidate for the procedure.
A small needle is used for the procedure similar in size to an insulin syringe. A small amount of sclerosing agent is injected directly into the vein. Compression is then applied for several minutes.
The treatment is not too painful with very little down time. Patients are encouraged to bring compression garments with them to continue the pressure for 24 hours after the treatment.
Activity can resume within 24hrs. Patient should avoid direct sunlight to the treated area for at least 7 days or hyperpigmentation could occur.
